It's not news that search engine optimization (SEO) can make or break your website. If you don't have an effective SEO strategy, your site won't be competitive in Google search results and will get very little traffic. How much traffic?

The most apparent answer to that question would be as little as possible. Still, the actual numbers can vary greatly depending on what kind of business you operate and how much you rely on organic search traffic to bring people to your site.

What Is Rank Tracking?

The term rank tracking is used to describe a method of monitoring the ranking of a website. A Rank Tracking software monitors the order of a website on search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing and alerts you when your site falls out of the top-ten rankings for any given keyword.

For example, if you are in the business of selling backpacks and want to know how your site fares against competitors in terms of ranking on Google's search engine results page (SERP), you may use rank tracking software to track how often your company's website appears on the first page of SERP for a backpack.

The software will track how often your company's web address appears at or near the top-ten results for that keyword over time and alert you if it drops below position 10.

Why Track Your Keyword Ranks?

There are several reasons to track your keyword ranks:

  • Track Keyword Rankings to Optimize Your SEO Strategy
  • Find out what keywords drive traffic to your website.
  • Monitor Your Competitor's SEO Efforts.
  • Identify Niche Markets and Keywords That Drive Traffic.
  • Use rank tracking data to indicate your site's well-positioned for the given keyword.

A lower ranking is not necessarily worse than a higher ranking because it indicates that you're getting less search engine visibility for the given term in question.

A higher order means you've been able to attract more attention from searchers with the same keyword, which can indicate that your site contains more content relevant to that particular topic than other sites in the same category.

Use rank tracking to indicate which keywords on your site have received visits from searchers in recent days, weeks, or months. One thing to remember is that Google now uses a slightly different algorithm for its search engine rankings, so there may be discrepancies between keyword rankings tracked by Google and those followed by third-party services such as SEMRush.

Tools You Can Use

You can use various tools for tracking rankings, depending on your needs and budget. If you're just looking for the basics and don't have a large budget, RankTracker is a free option that offers keyword monitoring with the ability to track up to five websites at once.

You can also use SEO Rank Monitor for $30 per month or SEO Spyglass for $97 per year. For those with a considerable budget, SEMRush offers one of the most robust rank-tracking services on the market.

As I was reading about these tools, I discovered there is no such thing as the best in this industry. Some people prefer more comprehensive service providers like SEMrush, while others like simple freebies like Rank Tracker. How much you pay is entirely up to you and your requirements!

Conclusion: How Important Is Rank Tracking?

Several factors go into ranking, and rank tracking is an essential part of the equation. Rank tracking is designed to track your orders for keywords over time in organic and paid search results.

Knowing your rankings for a keyword can be very helpful in determining how well you're doing at getting new traffic to your website or increasing sales. Rank tracking will help you know where you are and what direction you need to go to get your desired result.

It's not just about finding out if you have been penalized by Google. It's also about seeing how long your web page takes to show up on Google's first page in search engine results pages (SERPs). If there are other sites ahead of yours, then it may be necessary to tweak some aspects of your SEO campaign or even bring in a specialist.
